This position is not full-time. This position is intermittent and has no guarantee of weekly hours. A maximum of 1500 hours a year can be worked in this position. This intermittent position supports Caltrans full-time employee operations. Candidates must be available in the winter months for snowplow & chain control operations and may be required to report to work within 30 minutes of a callout. Intermittent employees may continue to work after winter months depending on operational needs. Successful intermittent hires through hard work and on the job learning will then potentially be able to use this experience in future applications and interviews for full-time positions.

Working under the supervision of a Caltrans Maintenance Supervisor, the incumbent operates equipment identified as Category 1 and Category 2 used by assigned unit and works individually or with a crew performing tasks related to highway maintenance work. May work with other crews. Required to work overtime, nights, and weekends due to storms, emergencies, special work projects, as determined by the Supervisor or Department. The incumbent will operate end-dump trucks from 2 to 10 cu. yards, with either automatic or manual transmission, and equipped with snowplows and sanders; may also operate front-end loaders, motor graders, snow blowers, equipment trailers, rear & side flail mowers, slope mowers and other related vehicles while performing stated duties. Accomplishes tasks normally performed b y the assigned unit, such as paving, shoulder grading, mowing, ditch cleaning, dig outs, pavement patching, repair or replacement of guide markers, signs, fence, guardrail, clean culverts, traffic control, litter pick up, maintenance of roadside rest areas and state buildings / facilities, and any other duties that would normally be assigned to a Highway Maintenance Worker or Landscape Maintenance Worker.

Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Caltrans Equipment Operator II Exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. 3. Hayfork Maintenance Station 360 Morgan Hill Rd. Hayfork

New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.

Special Requirements

  • The position(s) require(s) a Drug Screening be passed prior to being hired.

  • Employee will operate vehicles requiring a Class A commercial driver’s license with tank endorsement and operate and service specified equipment used in highway maintenance, structure maintenance, emergency service, landscape or construction.
  • Employment is contingent upon the candidate holding requisite skills for the position; being successful in the interview process; and passing a pre-employment drug test. Applicant must have passed the examination and be reachable on the current list for this classification.
  • The position(s) require(s) a valid unrestricted Class A commercial driver’s license, with Tank Vehicle (N) endorsement.
