Role Overview

We are seeking a Tax Associate / Experienced Associate to join our Insurance Tax Advisory practice. In this role, you will:

• Prepare workpapers and support provision and compliance engagements
• Research targeted tax issues specific to insurance carriers
• Collaborate directly with client finance, statutory reporting, and actuarial teams

Key Responsibilities

Provision Support (ASC 740 & SSAP 101)

• Build and maintain quarterly/annual provision workpapers for insurance entities (GAAP and statutory)
• Compute current and deferred taxes; assist with tax basis balance sheets and return-to-provision analyses
• Perform SSAP 101 DTA admissibility testing (realization / 3-year tests) and document conclusions
• Draft and tie out tax footnotes/disclosures for statutory Annual Statements and GAAP reporting

Compliance & Reporting

• Prepare federal corporate returns for insurers (Forms 1120-PC, 1120-L, 1120) and supporting schedules
• Prepare state income/franchise returns (separate, combined, unitary); manage extensions, estimates, and e-filings
• Support premium tax filings and Schedule T reconciliations; track retaliatory tax impacts across states
• Organize responses for IRS/state notices and examinations

Advisory & Research (Insurance-Specific)

• Research targeted insurance tax topics and draft concise technical memos (e.g., reinsurance structures, §846 loss reserve discounting, §848 DAC capitalization, §817 separate accounts, FTC, GILTI, BEAT)
• Assist with modeling tax impacts of reinsurance, acquisitions/dispositions, intercompany arrangements, and captives

Data, Process & Quality

• Reconcile STAT/GAAP/tax differences; maintain clear audit trails and version-controlled workpapers
• Build repeatable checklists and simple automations (Excel/PowerQuery, Alteryx) to accelerate close and compliance
• Leverage provision/compliance systems (OneSource, CorpTax) and workpaper tools (CaseWare, Longview)

Project Management & Client Service

• Track tasks, due dates, and dependencies; communicate status proactively
• Participate in client calls, gather data, and present findings clearly
• Collaborate with senior associates and managers; mentor interns/analysts as needed

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or progress toward CPA preferred)
• Must be USC or GC holder
• 1–4 years of tax experience, ideally within insurance, Big 4, or specialized tax advisory
• Strong understanding of ASC 740, SSAP No. 101, and federal/state corporate taxation
• Hands-on experience with tax provision/compliance software a plus
• Detail-oriented with strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills
